Austin marvels at the awesome fireworks display
at Firefall. As usual, his enthusiasm was fun to
watch on that wonderful day.

by Greg Landers

Austin on daddy's shoulders. "Firecracker Day" is one of Austin's most favorite. He gets really charged up whenever he hears one, even if it is a long way off. Last year we took him to see the fireworks display at Firefall and I thought he was going to explode with excitement. Once you watch someone experience something like that for the very first time, you can't help but look at life a little bit differently.

Austin in front of the Bass Pro Balloon. As usual it was your hot and sticky, late July weather here in southwest Missouri. Because it was the "Millenium Firefall", forecasters predicted a extra heavy attendance to the event this year. Based on that, we chose to go a little bit earlier than we would normally. The forecasters were wrong and we left early for nothing. We arrived there a little past 4 pm and began the group sauna thing --- (This is where you take 60,000 people and place them in the middle of a muddy field on a 95 degree day with a humidity of 99 percent.)

Austin marveling over the hot air balloons. Austin and I spent the first hour standing in line waiting to buy a $4.50 funnel cake. There was still three hours of daylight left to kill. After a couple of trips across the field to visit the porta potties (or as Austin calls them, the 'farms' --- because they look like little barns), we were surprised to find out that the spot we picked was a front row seat for watching the sky divers and hot air balloons take off. Austin really enjoyed this.

At about 9:20 pm the fireworks finally began. They were as awsome as ever. In fact they featured a new kind of firecracker that I had not seen before. They explode into shapes like hearts, stars and even flowers! Very impressive. All in all it was a good day. Next year, Autumn should be old enough to go and we will get to watch her reaction to this new experience also. Life's precious moments never cease to amaze me.
